2MARKETING AND PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The Reebok Division devotes significant resources to advertising itsproducts to a variety of audiences through television, radio and print media andutilizes its relationships with major sports figures in a variety of sports tomaintain and enhance visibility for the REEBOK brand. A substantial advertisingprogram was pursued in 1996 with advertisements directed toward both the tradeand the ultimate consumers of REEBOK (R) products. The major advertisingcampaigns in 1996 included a campaign which debuted during the 1996 SummerOlympic Games featuring Emmitt Smith in his "light-hearted" quest to havefootball accepted as an Olympic sport; an ad campaign starring Don Cornelius andfeaturing various Reebok basketball and football endorsers; and a Planet Reebokprint campaign featuring various Reebok endorsers.
As part of its marketing efforts in 1996, Reebok also signed a five yearexclusive world-wide agreement with America Online to develop and display aninteractive sports and fitness site on America Online.
Substantial resources were devoted to promotional activities in 1996,including endorsement agreements with athletes, teams, leagues and sportsfederations; event sponsorships; in-store promotions and point-of-salematerials. The Reebok Division continued its strategic push into the sportsmarket, gaining increased visibility on playing fields and in sports arenasworldwide through endorsement arrangements with such athletes as ShaquilleO’Neal, with whom Reebok markets a signature line of footwear, apparel andaccessories featuring his distinctive logo. In addition, in 1996 Reebok signed amajor endorsement agreement with Allen Iverson of the Philadelphia 76ers, whowas the number one selection in the 1996 NBA draft, and has begun marketing anAllen Iverson signature line of footwear and apparel products. Otherendorsements in basketball come from professional players such as Shawn Kemp,Clyde Drexler, Nick Van Exel and Steve Smith. Reebok also sponsors a number ofcollege basketball programs and in 1996 Reebok entered into a sponsorshipagreement with the Harlem Globetrotters. In addition, in 1996, Reebok was nameda founding sponsor of the women’s American Basketball League ("ABL"); Reebok isthe exclusive supplier of uniforms and practice gear to four of the league’seight teams and an official ABL licensee and has entered into endorsementagreements with a number of ABL players including Saudia Roundtree and JenniferAzzi.
To promote the sale of its cross training footwear, Reebok usedendorsements by prominent athletes such as National Football League (",Christian Louboutin Shoes;NFL")players Emmitt Smith, Derrick Thomas, John Elway, Ken Norton, Thurman Thomas,Herman Moore, Ben Coates and Greg Lloyd, as well as Major League Baseball("MLB") players Frank Thomas, Mark McGwire, John Smoltz, Juan Gonzalez and RogerClemens.
